what do you mean by essential?

i suppose it all depends on the sound you're working to achieve. i find it is good to throw a compressor (i'm a big fan of the 1976 preset that comes with 7), reverb, and delay in your return channels that way you can utilize your memory efficiently and get a little more punch or tail on a channel without actually adding giant strings of effects. it all boils down to your task at hand! if you've got the processor and memory available you can build gigantic chains in each individual channel but this will seriously suck your CPU if you're working at 96khz.

the routing capabilities are endless too - you can sidechain and side eq till your blue in the face and pull a channels audio source at any point - pre fx, post fx, or post mix - and then route it somewhere else if you so desire.

are you making this a rack you put in each channel? - i'm a bigger fan of EQ8 than EQ3 - though EQ3 is good for building DJ sets and mimicking a 3 band DJ mixer eq.

my personal favorite fx chain is a beat repeat, a LP auto filter with LFO set to 3/16 or 5/8, and a ping pong delay. throw that on your bass lines and set a couple controllers to chance, frequency, and wet/dry and you'll be warbling the neighbors all night.

      thanks for the reply...
i just mean the effects you use most often- essential like air (:
i have a nice new powerful macbook pro so i am not worried about cpu. i was thinking i would add the racks to my deck a and deck b. would it be better to add it to the return channels?

i rarely DJ with Live - but yeah, a couple EQs and compressors would be good for your Deck A/B setup. Beat repeat is fun to throw in a return and there's another preset rack that is in the Performance and DJ folder, I can't remember what it is called - but it has a cool beat mashup and hard pan/delay effect that is fun to use in the middle of a mix...

I usually play all original music so I'm running up to 16 channels simultaneously - big effects chains aren't as useful for me ; )

I always have a delay/reverb chain on one of the auxilliaries as that seems to be alot of fun to run just about anything thru for a "dub style" effect that I often employ. I am also a great fan of Beat Repeat and Supa Trigga (free AU plug that kind of chops and randomizes things: makes em all glitchy) in my live sets and will have a track dedicated to each one. I always compress on the drums and bass as well so generally, I'll have a compressor and a Beat Repeat or Supa Trigga on my drum track and a separate compressor for my bass. All of this runs out of my Mac thru a Korg KP2 (Kaoss Pad) for further looping and mangling (you really should get one of those.....they are a kick to use and will keep your sets spontaneous). I don't really tweak EQ live as I can filter everything thru the KP2 if I wanna go crazy......I definitely use EQ to make my tracks sit well in a mix though (and compression and distortion too). With some of this stuff I will just render those tracks with EQ and whatnot so I can save CPU.....my Mac is a G4 and bogs down pretty quickly so I often have to just bite the bullet and trust my ears and live with the result by committing to the sound.

The filter delay is pretty fun. Not sure if you'd want to use it on a track when you DJ, but it's great for me on synth patches. I also like the ping pong delay at times. They all have their benefits and particular uses. I recommend you just play around w/ them and see what you dig. Effects are always a matter of preference.

Of course reverb and compression are your friends in production if you're going that route.

For a DJ set, EQ, Compression, Delay, Flanger, Phaser, & Beat Repeats. (though I'm not a DJ and have only played around with Live as a DJ tool).

For track production, EQ and compression. Everything else depends entirely on the track I'm making.
