hey, i was wondering if anyone could give me some steps on how to sync two laptops together? I know that it's possibly and fairly easy to do but we have been having some troubles, I think there is something we are not getting.
our setup is:
2 macbook pro laptops (one running live 6 one running live 5)
Version 5 laptop has an m-audio firewire410 , the version 6 laptop has an m-audio midisport2X2.
I know that we have to set one laptop as the master and one as the slave, but we're not sure exactly who should be running the midi out or in? we're also not sure which things to select in abletons preferences (i believe there is remote, track, sync)?
anyone help would be MUCH appreciated!
thanks

Re: syncing two laptops via midi??
Thu, January 10, 2008 - 6:08 PMHere's the setup you'll want:
Master Computer
Midi cable connected to Midi Out
ONLY select the Synch button on that Midi Channel Out
Slave Computer
Midi cable connected to Midi In
ONLY select the Synch button on that Midi Channel In
Make sure Midi Clock (and not SMPTE Timecode) is chosen under the Synch options for the Slave. The Master's send clock can be set to Song or Pattern, your choice. I'd recommend Song if you have 2 diff comps on Live.
Finally click on the EXT button in the upper right of the Slave's main window to start accepting slave commands -

Sat, January 12, 2008 - 3:27 PMso we've tried this and it's still not working. do you think that its a possible problem from running two different versions of Live?
the slave computer seems to have its tempo disabled but the master cannot control the slaves tempo. tracks from either computer dont sync up. any ideas anyone? -

Sat, January 12, 2008 - 10:03 PMnevermind, we've got it now. narrowed it down to a bunk MIDI input on the firewire 410!! super smooth, thanks all. -

Re: syncing two laptops via midi??
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 8:03 AMThis setup does not utilize Rewire, right? We want to spin sets together and be beat matched, but both be able to control our own mix, then run both mixes into a common mixer for fine tuning of the main mix.
Cuz if I understand it right, with Rewire, one of us would just be a sub mix that is sent to the other guy for using or not using just like any other source for his mix. Am I getting this right?
cheers -

Re: syncing two laptops via midi??
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:18 AMAny time you slave one machine to another, the primary machine has the control and can effect changes to the slave's output. You might look into options otherwise, but slaving is the only way that I know to make sure that your clocks are synced. You could both run in through a mixer and use the channels on the mixer for control, but you lose clock syncing. -

Re: syncing two laptops via midi??
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 12:15 PMwe figured it out after much fiddling. its as simple as setting only the sync option for the midi ports on both computers. output from master, input from slave. set both computers to 1.1.1. and set them both to the same bpm. slave hits the Ext link button, then the master hits the master play button and from there you are good to go. this ensures perfect synchronization. the important thing is that ONLY sync is selected on the midi ports that are being used, if others are selected that are not in use the timing goes out.
make sense? -

Re: syncing two laptops via midi??
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 9:04 PMWell...if you have sync selected on the appropriate ports, then you will sync even if you have other settings selected too. For instance, if you also have "remote" selected on your slave's midi input port, then the slave will also be looking for commands from the master to control the settings of Live. In this situation, if I was slaved to your computer and I also had "remote" selected and you had "remote" selected on your output, then when you moved a slider on your midi controller while I was trying to assign a midi control to my master fader, then any time you moved that fader not only would you control what you had it mapped to, you would also move my master fader. If we both had "track" selected on our ports, then anytime I armed a track we would BOTH end up playing notes into that midi clip.
It took a bit of experimentation to find out exactly what was happening when I went to go record some midi and notes started showing up that I wasn't playing! Hehe...

syncing two laptops via midi??
Sat, September 13, 2008 - 4:51 PMHi, Here is my first question
I have in one side (Left) Macbook running Ableton 7 with trigger finger and xsession controling the ableton and my sound card for this macbook is Novation NIO 2I4. I play very well with this setup
In my other side (Right) IMAC running Traktor with 4 decks and XONE 3D, I am playing very well with this setup too
Now I want to play with both, I know how to sync both but my problem is:
How can i route my music from my MACBOOK (ABLETON 7) if in my IMAC i am using 4 channels from Traktor (4 decks)?
Thank you so much, i have no much experience in this -

Re: syncing two laptops via midi??
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 10:56 PMCould you put an interface between the two? So, you have them midi synced, but the audio from either is lined into an audio interface that feeds a single, mixed line from the both to your mixer? Just a thought. Otherwise, you've got me. -

Re: syncing two laptops via midi??
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 11:10 PMthere was an event here in portland, oregon called "Slammo" that had the Artists- fairly well known Psytrance professionals- all running mac's (8 of them total, and i PC) with different editions of ableton live from 4 to to 7, all were synced using ethernet. Midi keyboards were also in use. Perhaps you can look at the posts on Nw 604 tribe, and contact them? All in all, pretty impressive from a tech aspect....
