The x-session pro will work fine by itself in ableton. It's very basic and in a lot of ways very limited. But, if you're just trying to mimic a dj mixer-style setup then you've got all of your bases covered. Just remember that midi (even at the lowest latency achievable) will never be able to do quick fader cuts or have that same responsive control that a real mixer has.
I will say that it is very nice to show up to a gig with only a laptop and a small(ish) controller like the x-session pro. I miss that:)

At the moment, I'm using both an Acai mpd32 and the Evolution UC33 - I use the Evolution for my 3 band EQs, plus a low cut filter on each channel. I use the Acai for volume faders, looping, navigation, FX, etc. The Acai's easy light-up bank navigation is pretty sweet, especially since it allows the separation of switching between knob banks and pad banks.
However, after looking up Moldover's online videos about his gear, I'm thinking about switching to a Novation 25, and pimping it out like he did :P Lugging around 2 MIDI controllers around is a pain!

Midi controllers come in all shapes and sizes and it all comes down to personal preference.
I personally really love the akai mpd32. The pads are great. the sliders are steller. and theres a whole slew of buttons that can be programmed to be tempoary on off switches (ie, as long as you hold them down).
My only complaints about it are that I don't like endless rotary encoders (knobs) and thats what it has. For playing live you absolutely need normal knobs for doing filter sweeps, eqs, etc.
And the size of the unit. Its huge, for a midi controller.

I use mine alongside the m-audio x-session pro, using its knobs for filter work and so on.
I think the two make an excellent combination.

Thats my 2 cents
