Most mixers have the ability to control the volume of the track within the main mix, but not in the headphone cue. You have a headphone volume knob, and many mixers have a headphone mix knob (adjust mix between Main Mix and Cue), but you would have a VERY difficult time finding a mixer that can control the level of a track within a mix in the headphone cue only. Are you referring to the headphone mix knob? If this is the case, you can accomplish this by having more than 2 outputs, and most audio interfaces have the ability to adjust which output comes through the headphones and at what levels. If what's happening on your screen is what I see in my head, you just need to click the solo/cue button next to your master volume control to change the S button on your tracks to the headphone icon for cueing. Then assign buttons - or keys on the keyboard, for that matter, to activate. You can cue tracks individually, or (with no tracks cue-enabled) press the buttons assigned to each cue simultaneously to cue both the active deck and the deck you're bringing in. When the button says Cue, a button with a headphone symbol appears in each mixer track. Enable the headphone button and that mixer track goes to the cue. Then I have two "decks" a piece running into two busses setup with filters, echo, etc. so they're controllable per deck. The busses then run though the master channel. My interface is setup so that the master channel in Live routes to the Main Outs and the Cue routes directly to the headphone output. Since previewed samples in the browser play through the cue outputs, I figured there had to be some way to route mixer tracks to them as well. No cue option shows up in the output drop down though. The problem here is that I have no DJ mixer and I don't plan to buy one. I'm not a DJ, and don't plan to put a lot of work into becoming one right now, at least not until my album and the accompanying live show are done. I'm just playing around with DJing at this point, so I was hoping to do all my DJing through software until/if I take it up as a serious endeavor. That post was confusing. Most of the time I have everything routed to the master channel and just go out one pair into a single channel on whatever mixer is being used at the club or party. I use a Trigger Finger with three of the vertical faders controlling the volume on the decks, with a pad assigned to each of the cue buttons. Whenever I have access to a really nice mixer, like a DJM800, I'll take up as many channels as I can and cue through the mixer. For a little while I used an X-Session Pro from M-Audio because the faders had a great feel and it's laid out like a battle mixer, but it looks so much like it's should be called the Playskool My First Mixer!™ that my testicles actually shrank every time I touched it. I also had to reprogram the cue buttons so they weren't sending note on/note off. To address your original question, I don't know personally know anyone that cues with the cross fader. I have a couple of friends that split their headphones so they have mains in one ear and the cue track in the other. I only use one return that sends to a pair of outs, through my Kaoss Pad, then in through a monitor track so I can pass it through a limiter. I don't know if it's my ignorance or the Korg, but I can't seem to figure how to have that thing on direct without the signal coming back with a high "metallic" ring to it. I haven't tried to figure out if I can create a real effects loop so I'm only bringing in the wet signal. But I clearly digress... it makes sense to me that you can't cue the crossfader. A lot of the people I do shows with use the verticals instead of the crossfader, I just started doing it out of self-defense after finding the crossfader taped down with duct tape on too many times. Discovered I preferred it and haven't crossfaded since.
