okay, this is kindof hard to describe... but, I was inspired by a recent post about 'reverse reverb', which I've never tried...
I'm wondering if 'reverse reverb' is what I want to do...
sometimes, I hear samples coming into play in a way as if they're being sucked into the track... any ideas about what I'm talking about and how that's done?

But try all sorts of things, such as reverse delay, etc.
There are so many ways to bend the rules of production. I find that the reverse cymbals get kinda tired if used too much.
Subtlety, creativity, and the playing off expectation is key. Maybe do a reverse cymbal with a gated stutter. Or pause the reverse before the hit, etc etc etc
Just some ideas. -

Mon, February 25, 2008 - 9:34 AMTotally agreed. I've only really used them at phrase points. Any more than that and I too get bored with them. They do give that great slurping into action sound though.
I've at times reversed a reverb on a bass kick and set it to as wet as possible and lined it up with the straight kick sound. It wasn't entirely functional for the project, so I ditched it, but it was neat. Gave a bass fluttering slurp and then the bass kick hit upon it reaching the beginning of the reversed effect. I think I'll got home and play with this some more. Fun stuff. -

You can here it at the beginning of the track. I think it happens first in the 3rd bar.
I like the effect it has on making the drums slide around a bit.

Another thing you might be describing are filter sweeps.
If you open (or close) a HP or LP filter, it can have the effect of the sound being "sucked".
Its hard to say what you are trying to do without some sort of sample.

...but, today I was listening to Terekith's downtempo set 'Untied Knot' and heard a perfect example...
it was about at the 52 minute time... maybe a track called 'Underworld' by 'Best Magmu Ever'...

applying the reverse reverb to a percussion sound is desirable... but, how does it sound w/ a vocal? That's what I'm looking for... it's kindof like the vocal is coming in on the inhale, with the first note... then it seamlessly blends into the word... Any idea? -

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 8:03 PMI think it would work the exact same way.
Just try it out and see how it sounds.
If you have a vocal track, first cut the syllable (or phrase) you want that effect on.
In a sample editor, reverse the syllable (or phrase).
Apply reverb to the reversed part.
Bounce it.
Reverse the whole thing back.
Line it up properly.
Voila.
You may have to try out different reverb lengths/depths to get it where you want it. But it should be pretty easy to get something good.
I have done this with a piano passage where certain notes had this reverse reverb on it. Its a great effect on non-drum tracks, especially if used in a subtle way.
If you get it working well, I would love to hear what you come up with. -
