nuts abut warping

has anyone who tried using this software to mix songs live began going crazy because the warp markers are all wrong and the mixes turn out to be completely ugly? I began exploring this software a couple weeks ago and there are some tracks that are impossible to setup in Live to mix well. Doing the warp markers manually for complex songs will drive me crazy, and I have to use Live for a gig that is in less than a week. Does anyone have any methods/tricks to correctly set up the warp markers so the songs will mix smoothly?

does the statement "I'm exploring this software" automatically imply that I'm using a cracked version? geez! funny though, good one there.

        lol.
        ...anyways...
Pajero is right... you can just warp the beginnings and ends and set a loop on the end of your tracks to loop while you're mixing in the next song...
I've found that Live 6 doesn't warp songs as accurately as I'd like; I tend to do a slight adjustment or two to get it how I'd like... I haven't even tried mixing w/ the default warp, though! It might work just fine!
I focus on just getting the crash/clap on the 2s and 4s, on a 4/4... everything else is secondary...

anything on crack has trouble doing anything!

        Point.

I haven't had the problem you're describing, but I can see how it would be frustrating. I'm sure it's also because it's become second nature, so I warp them pretty quick.

Make sure your first marker is set on the one, I've never had a track where Live sets the first marker correctly. Warp setting should be Complex, I don't think you want to be using anything else at this point. Right-click on the first marker and warp straight. Check your markers and see how Live did. If it's getting closer you can slide the markers to adjust. If it did a terrible job on warp straight, try warp from here. Something with a solid kick you can get away with making slight adjustments then set a second marker only at the end.

What genre will you be playing? I normally play dirty breaks, which Live chokes on from time to time. Then I just make a lot more adjustments but it stil goes pretty quick. House tracks warp in about three seconds :P

Different people have different styles, let us know what you're playing and someone might be able to give some good quick specifics dealing with it.

          electro house, dirty electro mostly.

I'm doing the straight warping, and I'm trying to mix the tunes by ear, that is by playing them straight on the beat rather than having ableton do the beat counting. works pretty well except I can't listen to the cued song before sending it into the main mix, so my mix will be slightly off in some cases.

that would be because you need a soundcard w/a 2nd set of outputs. one can be configured as a headphone/cue out (which live is setup for) but you may not have enough time/money to do this b4 your gig.

"I've never had a track where Live sets the first marker correctly."

I've had better luck with Beatport purchased tracks finding the first beat properly (some it found exactly), but tracks from other sources (mainly emusic) seem to have a bit of silence at the beginning which throws off Live's warping. I generally warp those from the first beat and then warp to the end from about bar 32 or 64. Seems to work perfectly on most of the (electro and tech house) tracks I've warped.

... I noticed w/ Traktor, that the beatmarkers were never consistant with anything less than a WAV file... maybe something to do with the decoding... higher bitrates, I suggest, may help Live re-connect the decoded song w/ it's warp file...

          quote_"Warp setting should be Complex"

The only time that I'd ever recommend using the Complex warp mode is if you plan on straying far from the tunes original tempo and still really want to preserve the original pitch.
I recommend Always using repitch mode as it's the only one that won't introduce audible artifacts. If key and pitch are an issue then experiment with Beats or Complex.
Beats mode CAN sound ok if the track dosn't have many sustained sounds but otherwise it will give that wobbley sound. Ecspecially on bass lines. But in general Beats mode actually preserves transients and punch.
To me, Complex mode sounds really similar to an mp3. It's got this metallic sound and almost all punch and transients are lost when using it.

          For warping.
Adjust 1st warp marker to 1st beat.
Then go 4 to 8 bars into the track and adjust the next downbeat warp marker WITHOUT double clicking on it to turn it yellow. Adjusting it AS IS will shift all of the rest of the beats in the track appropriately.
Jump to the middle of the track and see if the rest of the downbeats line up. If not you may have to repeat the process.
In general this method works perfectly, ecspecially with 4 on the floor stuff where you just adjust the 1 or 2 warp markers and then you're done.
But you will always have the problematic tracks where you have to manually move every warpmarker every 4 or 8 bars through out the entire track.

It's a matter of opinion/religion/style, I've never had any of the problems you've had warping with Complex, nor any loss. I appreciate your analysis, however.

Ya, try warping Donovan's "Mountain Song". OMG. Electro is way too easy to warp when compared to live recorded music. Unfortunately, the live stuff is what I want to warp to pull samples from and remix. I do not, at this time, use Live to mix live.

"Lock upon my garden, it's a snail that's what it is."

Love that jam. I was at Burning Man 06 and I got bored early morning after being up all night and decided to bump his greatest hits. These two British women came up and were asking me what it was. It was so cute to hear them saying "oh Ingred, do you remember Donovan?" Best dance party of BM 06...lol, two people in attendance.
