I'm not a fan of M-audio gear in general. It's very reasonably priced in general, but doesn't hold up too well in mine and friend's experiences. Also, there is the theory that items you buy that get thrown away seemingly prematurely is a horrible way to treat the earth (especially with electronics). I use the Korg padKontrol. It's got a great li'l x-y pad, but only two assignable knobs. The appeal for the Trigger Finger seems to be the 4 faders. All in all, get the best quality and functionality that you can afford. Buying the cheep version is a way to get a good deal in the short term, but over time, you end up paying more. Akai also had a drum pad that I've heard good things about.

Hope this helps...perhaps if not, you can explain your needs and exactly what you are looking for in a controller. I just got a UC33 by Evolution for my fader and knob jamming and it's frikkin' great. I love it (bought from a buddy for $7 at his garage sale - lucky day).

I second the recommendation on Korg gear, as well as the sentiment about buying the best quality and functionality you can afford. I learned that lesson well in my early gear buying days.

But, dude! UC-33 for $7. Good day indeed! I have a UC-16, but always wanted to trade up to the 33. I was just lamenting the fact that I never did a few weeks ago.

Ya, I didn't know what I was getting when I bought it (I just knew that I wanted more knobs and some faders). Then I got it home and looked it up on-line. I called my buddy back and he was all "Pshaw, as long as someone gets some use out of it." Apparently he was double shipped on it (I'm ordering through him going forward - great luck on getting double shipped often. I'm really stoked on it.

Now I have from left to right my UC33, Korg padKontrol and a Novations x-station 25. I should be set until I really need more keys on my keyboard. Woohoo!!!!

If the x-session has keys as well as pads I would get it instead. You'll get more mileage down the road. Even if you don't find yourself playing keys now, you will find soon enough that writing your own basslines and leads is a kick in the pants.

Don, to the contrary (as a point and I'm not saying that you're wrong) and from my experience with gear (specifically guitar gear but it crosses over for me) I prefer to have independent units for independent functions. It's more to lug around, yes, but if one part of a multifunction item stops working, you get to replace the whole thing. However, if you have a drum pad unit and a midi keys unit and one of them bugs out, you don't have to replace both. Multifunction gear is something I tend to shy away from unless I really trust the manufacturer or have an extended warranty available. Just my opinion that I thought I'd throw out for the purpose of the discussion
