have you adjusted your audio i/o and sample buffer properly?

if you're running at 96khz/24bit - try it at 44.1/16 and see what happens. if that doesn't help, lower your sample buffer to a point just a little above where you can hear pops and drop outs in the audio - it should slightly decrease your CPU load. sample buffers divisible by 8 is a good way to go - 128, 256, 384, etc.

how many channels and chains are you putting into your sets? how much ram?

higher audio quality offers lower latency monitoring but definitely gobbles up a lot more CPU power.

Are you also using an external sound card/audio interface? That may help also. I have a g5 power PC w/ 2gig RAM and i get audio crapout at about 60% usage. Sucks. I'm wondering if I I'm going to just get road gear next and skip the ram upgrade or what. We'll see. I still have a functioning work station...I just have to bounce AUs often to audio.

We could use a lot more information about your setup for more thorough suggestions.

another thing I forgot to mention - try freezing some of your tracks and flattening them if you're at a point in production where you are satisfied with the sound - freezing will basically bounce the track and flattening renders it so that your effects chains aren't sucking CPU power on the channels you freeze/flatten.

thanks i switched to 44.1 and that did it..funny thing is i have messed around with the buffer but i dont remember switching the sampe rate to 96..so when do you use 44.1,48 or 96 as far as live pa or recording for render....thanks

i usually use 96 when i'm producing and rendering. 44.1 for performance. most people can't tell the difference. in an age of MP3s, the majority of the populace can't even distinguish between a CD and an MP3....so sad.
