the titl pretty much says it all... should my track levels b below -6db without any effects or compression, or should i adjust the levels to fall below -6db while compressor and effects are running?
thanks!!!

Re: levels below -6 before or after effect/compressor?
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 1:15 PMAre you mixing/producing a song or is this for performance?
The basic rule of thumb that I follow is that all output levels should be as strong as possible. Also, with Live, I've noticed that the signal can run hot (in the red) without clipping, much like a good ol' Pioneer mixer. I don't stress the occasional bounce into the red, but I never let it stay there. Can anyone else confirm this? It would make sense since it's geared toward the DJ types in this way and I have not seen any literatur to contradict it. I lost my manual ages ago in a move, so I haven't looked it up.
Star...more info please if you want more than a guess of a response. -

Sun, April 13, 2008 - 3:34 PMsorry... you mean you cant read my mind?
this is for performance.
would you recommend a compressor on each channel or just on the master? -

Re: levels below -6 before or after effect/compressor?
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 2:45 AMred lining is bad. even though Live's dithering process is so damn good you can blow it way over 0db and not have much noticeable distortion.
when I'm performing I set my faders to just slightly less than 0db (around -.03 or something) in Live's MIDI mapping so I can mix/crossfade/etc without blowing out the channel. however, more than one channel set to this with faders all up and no limiter/comp will definitely clip. i try and get all my channels as loud and clean as possible without clipping before even considering compression. compressing something that is already clipping just gives the unpleasant effect of a really punchy distorted sound. and unless that's your intention, it probably won't sound good, especially on a set of club speakers. most people don't notice those sorts of things, but anyone that performs/produces/etc will be covering their ears.
unity (0db, no clipping) is usually what you want to shoot for with or without compression. strong signal - distortion = happy.

Re: levels below -6 before or after effect/compressor?
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 10:47 PMI tend to keep my faders at -6, by default... I adjust them accordingly; if the song is quieter and is only reaching -6db, then I'll raise the level to come as close to 0db as is possable (when I want it to be loud)... some songs are louder or have stronger peaks... if they begin to hit the red, I pull down the fader to keep the levels below 0db. Live does have extra headroom to keep our sound from clipping, but it's good practice to keep it in the green.
On the master bus, I keep the fader at 0db, always... this keeps the output at full bit depth... by pulling down the master fader, we lose 1 bit per every -6db (Terekith's guide to mixing/levels).
If effects raise the output, I pull down the fader to keep the peaks below 0db. I avoid compressors and use effects as moderately as possable if they effect the sound to the point that they're creating unexpected peaks. Even if you choose to use a compressor, I suggest having it on only as an emergency peak controller, keeping unexpected peaks from killing anyones ears or soundsystems; compressors have to take the sound from somewhere, and that happens to be from your music.
Happy playing. -

Re: levels below -6 before or after effect/compressor?
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:57 PMwhen i produce i tend to go a little compressor happy, but for performance... i agree with sky--only use them as emergency or as a limiter more than a compressor. while you want to sound "full" you also don't want to sound "flat" or "squashed."

Re: levels below -6 before or after effect/compressor?
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 6:05 PMso if i have the faders set to -6 and the master set to 0, i shouldnt need a compressor as long as i use caution when using effects?
makes sense....
thanks for the help!!!! without you all, i couldnt be learning this fast!

Re: levels below -6 before or after effect/compressor?
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 6:29 PMcompression is a double edged sword. sometimes it is a useful tool, but often people don't use it correctly and just make everything go squish.
as for your faders, i'm sure you'll find the combination that works best - just make sure to keep that master channel in the green.
