Jacking in a Microphone to Ableton?

I've been dj'ing for many years but using Ableton Live for a little over a year now for mainly production purposes and live performances. I'm going to be starting up a new online radio broadcast and would like to plug in a microphone to announce certain tracks and promo spots. I'm curious to know if there's a way to mic-in using Ableton so that I don't have to pre-record those sound bytes.

hey all
I created my kick drum using operator and now need to convert it to mono. Is there an easier way to do it than to render it to disk?

5.2 bittorrent nightmare.

Well, I know your all going to give me a kick here, go ahead.

But the fact remains I downloaded 5.2 live on bittorrent to mess around with it, and I came
up with some tunes I really like. Now all of a sudden the copyright protection alarm bells have
went off, so like the story goes a person messing around with softwear for a while, likes it and now
is going to buy it, but it seems the files are infected with copyright protection.

Does anyone know when I buy the software if they will survive or not ?

Also does anyone know if you can still buy an older version like 5.2 from ableton or somewhere else ?

Thanks

Force play entire clip

I have an 8 bar clip. I want to make sure it always plays to the end, no matter when I stop it or select another clip.

I have set the launch quantization for that clip to 8, and that works for launching. It only launches on the 8s. However, it does not stop on the 8s. It stops on the next bar because my global launch quantize is at 1.

The only way I can figure out how to do this is to set the global launch quantization to 8, but I don't want that for the rest of the clips in the track..

And, I don't want one-shot. I want it to repeat.

Any ideas?

Hardware for DJing

I just posted about Trigger Finger but what I am really wondering is if I should get it at all. I've been DJing using ableton and only through my laptop, I've been just using the crossfader on screen and adding my own beats which I sampled from other songs. All pretty primitive. I want to step up my game and get some serious hardware so I can do more shit during my set and have better control. What should I get and what can I do with it? Thanks.

Live 8

Downloaded and installed the upgrade yesterday. 1st impressions are pretty good. The new features, although not groundbreaking in a way, are certainly very welcome in Live and fully help it feel like even more of a complete (almost one stop solution) daw.

Only thing is that it's running awfully sluggish and slow on my 8 core macpro desktop. I saw other peeps on the Abe Forum complaining about the same thing so it's probably just an early release bug. I expected some funky stuff from the 1.0 release but I still couldn't wait. After all, 1.0 users are essentially still beta testers.
But yea, the new features rock. The new warping engine is tight and the whole groove pool concept is very nice.
Grouping tracks is probably one of my fav things. You can shift click on a number of tracks and then hit 'cmd G' grouping them all. Then any processing you drop on the master Group header/track will be applied to all tracks in the group. It's like super simplistic busing. Awesome.
The new Multiband Compressor also seems to sound really nice and has a really straight forward interface.
Enhanced 3rd party plugin support is really good too. Now when u unfold the plugin parameters page you don't see a slew of hundreds of random controls to sift thru. Instead you see one 'Configure' button. CLicking it brings up the plugin Gui where all you have to do is single click on any knob or control and it will then appear down at the bottom. Very nice streamlining there. Although, I will report that at this time Reaktor still isn't really working under this feature (just as i imagined it wouldn't). Even after 'sorting and compressing id's' it still only allowed a few random parameters to even be seen for mapping by ableton. Anyways...
All in all Im happy with it but I hope for a bug fix within the next couple of weeks.

What monitors do you use?

What is a good brand, medium priced that will reproduce crisp clear sound? I just need it to finish off mixes so I can take them to a studio to master properly. Currently I own a pair of Behringer MS10, which are small, are quite clear though, but are missing important low frequencies. They're not horrible, but the sound is cheap, just as their price, and I need new speakers..

Serato or Traktor with Ableton?

So I know this gets asked a lot in various online forums, but I'm curious - who here has used scratching/"traditional" dj software at the same time as Ableton? What have been your feelings, hardware preferences, and setups? What has proved disastrous in terms of cpu usage? What about using Ableton for FX?
If there's a great previous thread I'd also be grateful for a link.
I know Ableton and Serato made a big deal out of their amorphous "partnership" last fall, but nothing seems to have come of it.

It's been a while... I picked up a tablet PC for use w/ Live 7 and my Novation Remote SL25... Generally, a nice mobile rig, with an M-Audio Fast Track Pro.
Yet, and if you've used a tablet with Live you may know, the control of faders, knobs and envelopes is out of control.
Has anyone found a viable workaround for this on an XP machine?
Thanks!

Do most people use Live as a production tool or a live tool.

If a live tool then is it just DJin with live? (Prerecorded tracks mixed?)

Looped beats and then you "Play" the instruments with a midi controller?

Make loops on the fly with instruments you already have in a set and mix live?

How do YOU use Live?

I was wondering if anybody has found a way to enter text regarding track info into the "info view" window. I'd like to be able to select a track and have (along side the waveform, track options, etc), the info view box have my notes on the track (ie, "Pitch +2 and mix with Another Planet, check send A and Akai MIDI bank 2 for Sweep-Res). Is this possible?

Live 7 suddenly can't open saved files...help!

Hey all,
I'm running Live 7 on a Macbook Pro with 6 GB RAM (a 4 GB stick and a 2 GB stick, and they both check out both when I check the RAM with the OS as well as with 3rd party software) and 120 GB free HD space . Live opens up fine, but when I try to open a saved file (ie, all my sets and previous saved work) it either says that I have "insufficient memory" or just "quits unexpectedly" (ie crashes). It has been working just fine for months - and now this.
I deleted all my live files (not including old saved work which is on a disconnected external drive), and reinstalled - but it still has the same problem.
Has anybody else encountered this problem, and have you been able to fix it?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I contacted Live, but they sent back an email saying that they were very busy and would get back to me "eventually" (I assume they've been swamped with "when can I buy Live 8" emails).
- Baz

hi!!

i've been trying to keep my library( media monkey on a P.C.) super clean and well classified and now want to
incorporate KEys and BPM to it

will ableton live reads tags as tracktor does. or is it only reading the file names???
in the case it reads only the files, i will have to write KEys and bpm one by one on each tracks which i'd love to avoid....

any clues???

merci

Cubase Or Ableton?

So I have been a Ableton user since version 5 "know using Live 7".. I definately enjoy the ease of use but I have to say honestly that as I have been advancing in knowledge in all aspects of production & composition.. I notice a lot of people complain about lives audio engine and honestly I feel this is a rookie complaint. I feel that live is actually quite honest with you, in fact if the mix sounds bad then your the one to blame. I have been geeting all sorts of ooh's and ahh's using live and my book given knowledge, where as other daw's "logic" I feel over color and utalize the hell out of a stereo imaging preset allgorhythim.. So moving forward my problem is not with the sound engine, it is however with the amount of possibilities one has to use in order to maximize creativity from audio clip edditing, midi options (edditing and such) and profesionalism with it's audio plugins and interface use. I feel it is to focused on chance and not allowing it's users complete hands on control.
There for this live user is moving on to cubase.. Anyone out there have any good feedback with this?

Recently, I've been running a ton of complicated racks (with multiple racks inside of them...it's racks all the way down, you see)...
And my CPU has been hurting pretty bad.
I know that with programs like Logic, you can distribute some of the processing functions to other computers via ethernet. Can you do this with live?

Also, if it is possible, can one use it to reduce latency when using it to take in data from live performances that I'm using to control sidechained gates? Is there ANYTHING one can do to reduce that kind of analog-digital-analog latency?

Isolating portions of the EQ for separate effects?

I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to isolate portions of the eq in order to effect them separately? For example, taking just the high end and running beat repeat on it, or having two tracks playing together and wanting to run ducking compression on just the low end so that the basses don't overpower each other yet avoiding the "sea sick" problem when you compress the whole mix and everything keeps fading in and out (I'm sure you've heard songs that have this issue).
Advice? Ideas?
Thanks!

I stumbled across this plugin that just came out and could only find one review bcz its pretty new, but the review was good so i decided to buy it. I have been looking for a good glitch plugin that I can use on my mac and have used Major Malfunction (which I havent been able to get into bcz the demo beeps at you so it just isnt fun to experiment with. I bought Effectrix by SugarBytes and like that alot, and now i have Automaton. I think it is the most fun of the three. I have been fiddling with it for hours now and it sounds so great I had to come spread the good word! (:

I've been using Live since version 5. I have never, ever, ever been able to sync my external hardware with, say, tracks I buy and warp to the first beat. I know this is due to latency and I know how to fix it when the monitoring is turned off... My question is , is there really away to find that sweet spot where I can play my midi slaved hardware and keep it in time with tracks arranged as mentioned at the beginning of this post.

thanks in advance.

As you may have already heard I am extremely in to unique song structuring and sound design. I seek to achieve a Hot as possible signal with out clipping.. Your feed back is always appreciated..

http://depositfiles.com/files/8244051
Just click on the free link and wait till download.
This Track is highly compressed it's only like 7.8 mb as opposed to its original state at 108 mb. So it should download much quicker than it's predecessor.

I made some sound changes and a bit more e.q structuring along with a better grove to the beat.. Love to have feed back if you can thanks and have a happy day...

This is likely the last AMV video project Opposite of Faith will do. It is meant to be a demo of the advanced MIDI set up and creative application of the tools we are capable of. We remixed the song ‘Phaseshift’ and created the sound track to it. It feature the combination of the Legendary DJ Quest-one of the founders of modern turntablism, inventor of ‘Hamster Style’ and ‘Power Scratching’

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_Quest

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyaSiUSR8j4

Once again this is a scratch soundtrack-all sound effects were created through DJ performance and/or sound design. Video cuts were done with Serato and any edits or warping were done in Ableton Live and After Effects.

The Dave Smith Instruments Evolver is the master sequencer and controller in this set up. You can see how it works especially during the end solo. Its sequencer sends out MIDI notes to control both Turntables-which are slaved via MIDI-changing their pitch which alters the speed of the turntable platter, This process alters the sound of what ever the turntables are playing and creating a melody matching the Evolvers sequence. The audio signal is also processed on a separate chanels which is brought in through the effects loop. The Ecler Nuo 4 and the Behringer FCB 1010 control parameter (MIDI Control Changes) to give Quest additional control options.

DJ Quest Set up 1:

Video:

Vestax Controller One Turntable
Rane/Serato Video SL
TTM 57
Mixer Video Cuts were done mostly in a separate pass using Serato Video SL

Audio 1:

Vestax Controller One Turntable
Numark CDX CD Turntable
Ableton Live
TTM 57 Mixer

Various samples and sounds that need to be cut in a particular way were burned to CD and the Numark CD was used

Audio 2:

Dave Smith Instrument Evoler
Vestax Controller One Turntable
Numark CDX CD Turntable
Rane/Serato TTM 57 Mixer
Ecler Nuo 4 MIDI Mixer
Behringer FCB 1010

The Koass Pad was used as a MIDI controller and the Evolver was used as a MIDI slave and sound processor

J from the Opposite of Faith’s set up:

KP 3 Kaoss Pad
Dave Smith Instruments Evolver
Ecler Nuo 4 MIDI Mixer

syncing two laptops via midi??

hey, i was wondering if anyone could give me some steps on how to sync two laptops together? I know that it's possibly and fairly easy to do but we have been having some troubles, I think there is something we are not getting.

our setup is:
2 macbook pro laptops (one running live 6 one running live 5)
Version 5 laptop has an m-audio firewire410 , the version 6 laptop has an m-audio midisport2X2.

I know that we have to set one laptop as the master and one as the slave, but we're not sure exactly who should be running the midi out or in? we're also not sure which things to select in abletons preferences (i believe there is remote, track, sync)?

anyone help would be MUCH appreciated!

thanks

I have a few tracks loaded into Live to DJ with Fader F1 assigned as my crossfader and pads P13-P15 on the Trigger Finger. Now I have this problem... whenever I hit an assigned pad to start a track to play it also has loaded drum sounds like for ex. when I hit P13 it has a Hi-Hit sound before the track plays or a bass drum sound when I hit pad P14. How do I unload the drum sounds so when I hit a pad to start a track to
play... it'll play without hearing a drum sound?

Anybody out there using it? I really like my sound with Guitar Rig, but looper is pretty terrible. I'd like to use looping capabilities with Live.

Anybody doing this? How's it going?
6-7 upgrade

I think it has to rebuffer all the samples after you upgrade, because it is taking me about 25 minutes to open my projects after the upgrade. Which is definetly a big bummer when your feeling like grabbing a sound out of another session...

Midi files keep changing my patch?

Does anyone know the answer to this?
I have some Cure midi files that I've downloaded and have been messing with in Ableton and Logic and there's some kind of patch change (or control change?) info embedded in the files so everytime it's triggered from the beginning it switches the synth patch back to some default preset.
What is this called and how would I disable/modify it?
I doubt that Ableton would be capable of this but maybe how is it done in logic?

I'm sure there's been a post about this is the past... I'm not seeing it, though.
I've heard something of using a 'crossover cable'... but have no experience... seeking guidance...
basically, would like to sync up a couple of laptops in a tag-team set, or a live collaboration.
Thanks!

pre-listening with a stock macbook ?

I was wondering if you can use your built in audio in/out, and your headphone jack on a macbook for pre-listening ?

I will get a audio interface some time, but was wondering to practice mixing two songs, for the sake of getting the basics with just a stock computer, although I do have a griffin I Mic somewhere if that would help, but I was getting some crappy sound from it perhaps it is broken.

Thanks

Some useful key commands in Ableton.

    * Option-F11 (PC: F11 alone): Full screen mode
* Option-Cmd-B (PC: Ctrl-Alt-B): Open/close browser (and arrow keys scroll).
* Shift-TAB (PC: TAB alone): Switches between Arrange View and Session View (the linear track view and live performance-oriented clip view, respectively).
* Shift-SPACE: Starts/stops playback at the current playhead position; i.e., it’s a pause function. (SPACE alone starts at the beginning of the song.)
* Cmd-1,2,3,4 (PC: Ctrl-1,2,3,4): Adjusts the active quantization grid in current clips while editing. This one is really essential, of course.
* Cmd-arrow keys (PC: Ctrl-1,2,3,4): Controls Loop Region length. This really speeds up editing in a big way. Up/down uses a large increment (doubling/halving), whereas the right and left arrow keys use a small increment.
* Cmd-D (PC: Ctrl-D): Duplicate (and it duplicates everything, so it’s handy in Session View)
* Cmd-I (PC: Ctrl-I): Insert silence
* Cmd-B (PC: Ctrl-B): Draw Mode – essential for being able to switch between drawing and selection in clip piano roll, envelopes, etc.
* Shift-Cmd-I (PC: Ctrl-Cmd-I): Capture and Insert Scene. This cleans up your set by taking combinations and automatically inserting them in scenes.

I have recently been doing tag-team sets with a friend of mine who spins vinyl. When I've been beatmatching with him, I've discovered that Live doesn't have a "pause" button - the equivalent of just putting your hand on the record and stopping it. Am I right? Did they leave this off of Live, or am I just ignorant of the location of this rather important feature?

i just got logic 8 and i'm considering doing all my production in that and only using live for performance. although i love the quickness of live i just don't quite feel like the production quality is there. there are many issues in making the comparison i suppose, such as how the sound engines/VSTs etc. of the two programs compare or how convenient live functions such as warping effect audio. i was quite amazed when i bounced my first ableton files into logic and they were all clipping away. things such as this make go hmmm...

Hey all. I joined a remix context and nope to win a bunch of gear if I get 1st or 2nd place. Please hit the link below to go vote for me. I'd really appreciate it. You will need to sign up for a "fan" account to vote, but please take the time to. The original track was a not so crazy Crystal Method track. In listening briefly to the other entries, it sounds like mine is the only one that went the dnb route.
Here's the link:
http://www.fuzz.com/contest/remixingprotools/gallery

Please vote ASAP. Voting closes at the end of September. If you let me know that you voted for me either on this thread or by PM, I'll arrange to get you a CD of my tracks. Just ask.
Thank you, and wish me luck.

Audio & Midi Recorded offset

I'm a huge Live fan & user but i have one issue i can't get my head around.
I know this topic has been discussed to some degree. Has it just become commonly accepted that anything you record & monitor is out of time with what you originally played?

For those unaware

Example's =
If you plug in any live input (Bass, vocal mic, midi keyboard, anything) Hit play, & start recording you will not be recording what your playing to the music but the delayed output based on your latency settings. This is fine for software monitoring you can't get around that. But for the actual audio&midi that gets recorded should be compensated.

There is a PITA is a workaround.
Tracks record in time if you turn off the monitoring for that track.
So you need to make 2 tracks for every live input.

One to be the record track.
One to be the monitor source or VSTi track.

Turn the monitor off on the record track and route the signal to the monitor track.

I wish this delay was compensated like most other hosts.

I just made a mix with Live, going between the laptop and cdjs, and realized all the tracks I played through live have a tremolo sound to them. Its not super pronounced but its definitely audible and unwanted. I'm running Live through a newer Macbook and an M-Audio Firewire 410. Anybody else had the tremolo they didn't want?

Rewiring Reasn into Ableton question

Ahoi
So Ive loaded Live and Reason, opened an audio and midi track in Live for my NN 19 instrument and every thing works when I play it.
But, how does one record the Reason instrument then? I can only get the NN 19 to a) play if the pattern button (matrix) is on..and
b) loop over and over.
When I record it in Live's audio track I get the audio and its drawn as normal. But it wont play if the pattern button in Reason is not on, which makes it loop?? Question
It's possible that you cant record the rewired instruments, and you have to just run Reason simultaneously and loop the instruments? Or what's the deal with rewired instruments..this is my first attempt and I'm very close to done with the track.
Please help
Gracias
Mulu

always tinkerin to try to squeeze better sound outta abletown. i heard a rumor that it's better keep your master and channel faders lower in live and turn up your soundcard and mixer levels. more headroom in live is better? my master in live stays in the red a lot of the time and i'm always wondering if i should back it off. I have peeked over some pretty hefty shoulders though and seen the master in the red. any other thoughts on gain structure would be much obliged.

hello everybody, this is a double post, not sure which tribe is more active.....
I just recently blessed my computer by loading up ableton 7 but still am having
trouble working it. The tutorilas on the actual programs helps a lot, but it seems like
I need to take even one sep back and begin from skratch.....

....so.....

without bringing up old questions, coz I'm sure this
one has been asked, but
?where can one find good intro tutorials for live?
I found some on youtube, but still too advanced for me at this moment
Tnaks in advance for any response!!

I'm about to switch from a Firewire audio out to a usb one, and I'm also running two usb midi controllers, so I need to know if I'm asking for trouble since I only have two usb ports on my computer.

I'm loving this site, both as a listener and as an artist. I'm finding a ton of good music and getting good exposure on my tracks as well. Check it out and if you sign up, please say craigm referred you.

From thesixtyone.com:

Our Mission

thesixtyone makes music discovery a fun, adventurous experience with persistent reputation and rewards -- it's like a massively-multiplayer game for music junkies who are always on the prowl for new sounds. For everyone else, it's a spot where anybody can instantly start listening to good new music...a place that personifies people getting excited about music simply because they enjoy it.

How does it work?

Musicians upload their music for listening, but rather than allowing the Simon Cowells of the world decide which songs go on the homepage, the listeners do. How, you say? If you like a song you've found on thesixtyone, just click the "bump" button to increase its bump count. Doing so will cost you points, but if songs you bump get bumped by others, you can earn more points! Collecting points increases your level and reflects your skill in picking top songs in your favorite genre!

By listening to songs through the lens of the collective community on thesixtyone, you'll always find good new music. We're committed to giving every bit of music on the web the opportunity to find its audience.

why i dont like trigger finger- am i wrong?

the main reason i dont like the trigger finger is that the knobs retain their location... meaning, when i use preset p1 and change values with the knobs, when i go to preset p2, the knobs still think they are where they were in preset one.
is there any way to change this?
what controller does NOT do this?
thanks for the info!

I thought I had this problems fixed but I guess it isn't. I am having dropouts when triggering new tracks on my macbook pro. I have read this is an issue with the intel macbook pros and am wondering if anyone has any advice.
my settings are:
1024 buffer size
input latency 26.3
output latency 26.8
driver error compensation 0
overall latency 53.1

i have a laptop chill pad running so computer is not hot and my cpu never gets up over 20%
this is a new computer and i have no problems with it other than this- 2gb ram, all music files on my laptops hard drive...., 2.4ghz cpu

i am going to try troubleshooting some more but i have a big party coming up in a week so any help is much appreciated!

Remote SL 25 buttons 9 thru 16 in Automap

Buttons 9 through 16 (under the top row of knobs and above the bottom row of knobs on the left side) are supposed to be open for midi mapping in the Ableton Live Auto Template (40), but they are very quarky for me:

I've been trying to map them as EQ kills for L M and H on EQ3's in my audio tracks. But after I map it, here is what happens: I press the button once and it turns the EQ range OFF, but when I press the button again, the range doesn't turn back ON. If I fiddle with the #'s within the mapping setting (i.e. 0 /127, or 64/127 etc) I can get it to do the opposite - turn on but not off, or I can get it to kill as long as I hold down the button, but never just OFF then ON.

Oddly enough it works perfectly if I try mapping to a key on the keyboard. Press once to turn OFF, press again to turn back ON. But I really want to be able to use buttons 9 through 16, otherwise it's just a waste of space.

Anybody have any ideas?

cheers,
Share/Post Collected Ableton Sets Here (.als files with collected samples, zipped)

I've just learned the basics of Ableton7 and am now looking for tricks and refined techniques for remixing and programing tracks. I haven't noticed a thread like this, so if it exists, I apologize in advance!

If anyone wants to share their methods, show how they're working, we can post links for downloading our collected sets here. Not that I need to explain to anyone here, but collecting the set first will ensure there aren't any missing samples/loops, etc and that we'll be able to see the full set. Using sendspace.com or similar free file sharing sites, folks can offer up what they're doing with links for download.

Sound like a good idea?

I need help learning, so it sounds great to me!! I don't have many VST's yet, so that could be an issue, but I think it's worthwhile anyway... If you use a particular VST or plugin, please list it when you post your set. That'll help ensure we each have the tools to open the files, right?

If you have suggestions for how to make this work better, please be sure to post them. I'm a total novice!

Cheers,
Ian

I need some cash to buy a new PC and replace my ailing Ultralite, so I'm getting ready to put some hardware up for sale on ebay in the next few days. Thought I'd give peeps here a crack at it before I do.

I'll be selling the following:

Dave Smith Evolver + original box + ac adapter
BOSS RC-50 Loop Station + all original accessories (manual, adapter, cd, etc...)
MOTU Timepiece AV

All are in excellent working condition. I may have the manuals for the Evolver and the Timepiece, but I haven't found them yet, so I don't want to promise them in the sale. I'll do another search for any loose odds and ends before I ship.

If anyone is interested, send me a private message for pics and prices...

NEWB: Matching Audio Clips and Warp Marked MP3's

Hey Folks,

I've had some issues which I'm guessing are common and most of you know the solution to. Before introducing MP3's to a set, I adjust the warp markers. I start 1.1 on the first downbeat after manually adjusting BPM. But when I introduce an audio clip sample or another warp marked Mp3 to the set, the downbeats often don't match up for the various songs. Is there a way to further automate this so that all the songs and clips beat match properly? Maybe I'm warp marking them incompletely? Or perhaps I should move the start points of most everything to the first downbeat so when the clips are fired they start at a similar beat?

The only other thing I can think of is having to cue everything..... But that seems like something Ableton does for us? Am I wrong?

Thanks!
Ian

How do I record midi sequences with Live 6??

So I've been playing around with my Xio synth and 2 programs--Massive and Tassman 4. The presets for these interfaces are amazing, but I cant record the midi sequences with Acid 6 or Live 6. I have a feeling Acid may be easier, so either technique will work for me if you know. All I want to do is record a sequence I play through Massive or Tassman, save it, and open it up in Sound Forge. The first time tried with Acid I was able to record the sequence, but when I played it back, the notes were basic notes from the Novation Xio. I have followed detailed instructions for Live6, but I am unable to record the sequences......really driving me nuts.... Can anyone throw up some useful links or step by step directions for either one of these, please????

Peace out.

Hey Folks,
Does anyone using a Trigger Finger know how I can make a pad trigger a sample or song and set the same pad to send start and stop info? If I hit the pad it just starts the song, but I'd also like that same pad to stop the song. I've been googling it trying to find a good answer for a bit to no avail! I've downloaded Enigma if that helps. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

MIDI Drum Pad Controller with Super Fast Reaction Time?

Here's my dilema. I want to record some very fast drum parts. (double bass metal drums) I've tried both Akai and Korg controllers. No good. They're just not fast enough to keep up with my fingers and they drop a ton of hits. Even though I haven't tried it, I'm guessing the Trigger Finger is going have the same problem (being the same price point and all). A keyboard just won't cut it for me as I can't stand the feel of the keys when "playing drums". My best solution to get that nice rolling triplet double bass has been to use three fingers on three different pads but it's kind hard to keep my rhythm solid due to the finger stretch involved in that method.

The only thing I've found that looks like it would do the trick is the Zen Drum, but I'm not in a position to dump $1000 on one of those. Has anyone seen another "drum controller" at a price point between the $200 MIDI pad controllers and the wallet emptying, Zen Drum?

New Apple Computers....suggestions.....

Hey Everyone,
I'm selling off my PC equipment and buying 2 new computers to switch over Mac. I'm new to Ableton and was wondering a couple of things as a newbie. Could I run into any problems using an iMac? I understand they aren't upgradeable (except the RAM). My concern is that I won't be able to upgrade the sound card, which it seems like most people here do. How will I output quality sound from the computer? Will I have to buy an external usb sound card? I also purchased a MacBook Pro laptop. Will the sound card be ok with that? I plan on buying a powered usb hub for all the various inputs.

Honestly, I don't really understand why I need a different sound card, if you don't mind, I'd love to hear any input about why I might upgrade.

And finally, can I buy a sound card that will allow me to input to my computers, and thus record into ableton, sound from external sources like guitars, etc.....

Set up will be:
2.6 GHZ MacBook Pro
2.8 GHZ iMac with 4 GB RAM

Thanks in advance for all the help!!

Four Band Frequency Divider Audio Rack (Preset Download)

This is a 100% transparent Four Band Frequency Divider Audio Rack for Live. Unlike the factory multiband live presets this keeps your audio integrity intact. This can be used for frequency dependent FX & mastering purposes. This uses subtractive phase techniques as opposed to minimal phase EQ. In other words the basic signal flow design framework wont change or color your audio. You can test this by double bussing & inverting the phase.

Future Music mag (jan '08 issue) praised this as one of the big improvements with this version. I've noticed people complaining in the past that exported/rendered mixes sounded squashed/thin/low-res/whatever. Anyone notice the improvement?

Something very different…The KARAS AMV by the Opposite of Faith featuring DJ Quest

What you are about to see is an evolution in film sound design far different from anything you‘ve heard before…

The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyist who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.

This is the first in series of creative Music/Video/Art Projects by the Opposite of Faith-creativity without compromise…

how did i get to be so lucky? newbie and proud!

Hi everyone,
I have a friend who always tells me i should dj and i say, yes of course, i know i should but i dont have the money for a new computer to do what i want to do... that always seems to be the problem, this lack of new computer. so when my friend told me about an event coming up that i attend and that she thought i should dj, i decided to figure out what kind of program i COULD run on my computer. I decided on ableton and was playing around with it and it was awesome! i showed my girlfriend some things and told her that i would have to wait until i got a new computer so i could fully explore the potential of the program because it could only handle about 2 things before it started skipping and stuttering.

SHE HANDED ME HER CREDIT CARD!

how lucky am i to have a girlfriend who believes in me and can see my passion so clearly as if it was her own?! believes in me so much that she is willing to put money down to support me! (she does pay off her credit card bills immediately)

so now i have a macbook pro on the way along with a novation nio 2/4 and a novation remote 25sl compact!!!!
I am waiting at the end of the driveway for the fedex man!

....so lucky i should go buy a lottery ticket....

okay, this is kindof hard to describe... but, I was inspired by a recent post about 'reverse reverb', which I've never tried...
I'm wondering if 'reverse reverb' is what I want to do...
sometimes, I hear samples coming into play in a way as if they're being sucked into the track... any ideas about what I'm talking about and how that's done?

hi,
i am doing one little party and am always told i should be a dj just for my musical taste and ability to pick songs... i dont want to be lame at this party so want to use ableton and my laptop. so i was reading the user manual and it says to cue, you need atleast 2 stereo outputs on an audio interface. i need to buy one but dont want to spend a bunch of money. can someone point me in the right direction? i have a powerbook g4 but i only have a 550mhz processor so that limits me because even the m-audio x-session requires a 667mhz processor.
do i really need two stereo outs or can i have one stereo for connecting to the sound system and one mono out for my headphones?

sigh... if only i could get my girlfriend to buy me a new macbook pro...
thanks for the help!

nuts abut warping

has anyone who tried using this software to mix songs live began going crazy because the warp markers are all wrong and the mixes turn out to be completely ugly? I began exploring this software a couple weeks ago and there are some tracks that are impossible to setup in Live to mix well. Doing the warp markers manually for complex songs will drive me crazy, and I have to use Live for a gig that is in less than a week. Does anyone have any methods/tricks to correctly set up the warp markers so the songs will mix smoothly?

Ok one more for you all. I inherited this great analog drum machine a few years ago. It's rhythm presets are some of the best retro drum sounds. For the best representation of this unit i have created REX loops. I have included all 18 rhythm presets plus "System running clock noise" sampled@32/48,000. The "System running clock noise" is the amplified output of the MRK-2 sitting at idle (no preset).
Enjoy.
(Live users don't forget to "Slice to New midi track". They are great to use with Drum Rack.)

This is the TR-505 DeComposer.
What you have are 29 24bit/44,100 Samples of this beast. Every pad has been captured with pristine TC-Electronic A/D converters. It's knobs&toggles have been tweaked to generate some of my favorite sounds. I have also included “Noize” samples of the amp output abuse mod. All samples are unaltered. This is the DeComposer as is. Enjoy this circuit bent disaster.

help with foot controller and Ableton Live

Hi there!
I would really appreciate if someone can give me a hand with this:
I'm a guitarrist trying to make use of Ableton Live by using a foot controller (Nobels MF-1)
I'm sending MIDI messages to Ableton through my MIDI interface (emagic MT4) and it looks that Ableton is receiving the MIDI as I see that little box flashing on the right hand side of the screen..
However, I can't map or change any parameter with the pedals...
I think that this foot controller sends program changes only... I
s that a problem?
I would like to trigger clips, scenes, looping, etc with the pedals....
Any help???

Cheers
Eliseo
