Help me win - vote for my remix

Hey all. I joined a remix context and nope to win a bunch of gear if I get 1st or 2nd place. Please hit the link below to go vote for me. I'd really appreciate it. You will need to sign up for a "fan" account to vote, but please take the time to. The original track was a not so crazy Crystal Method track. In listening briefly to the other entries, it sounds like mine is the only one that went the dnb route.
Here's the link:
http://www.fuzz.com/contest/remixingprotools/gallery

Please vote ASAP. Voting closes at the end of September. If you let me know that you voted for me either on this thread or by PM, I'll arrange to get you a CD of my tracks. Just ask.
Thank you, and wish me luck.

Audio & Midi Recorded offset

I'm a huge Live fan & user but i have one issue i can't get my head around.
I know this topic has been discussed to some degree. Has it just become commonly accepted that anything you record & monitor is out of time with what you originally played?

For those unaware

Example's =
If you plug in any live input (Bass, vocal mic, midi keyboard, anything) Hit play, & start recording you will not be recording what your playing to the music but the delayed output based on your latency settings. This is fine for software monitoring you can't get around that. But for the actual audio&midi that gets recorded should be compensated.

There is a PITA is a workaround.
Tracks record in time if you turn off the monitoring for that track.
So you need to make 2 tracks for every live input.

One to be the record track.
One to be the monitor source or VSTi track.

Turn the monitor off on the record track and route the signal to the monitor track.

I wish this delay was compensated like most other hosts.

The Tremolo I Don't Want

I just made a mix with Live, going between the laptop and cdjs, and realized all the tracks I played through live have a tremolo sound to them. Its not super pronounced but its definitely audible and unwanted. I'm running Live through a newer Macbook and an M-Audio Firewire 410. Anybody else had the tremolo they didn't want?

I've been using an M-Audio 410 for about 4 years but I'm looking to try something different. It just doesn't seem to be very happy with my Mac anymore :(

Rewiring Reasn into Ableton question

Ahoi
So Ive loaded Live and Reason, opened an audio and midi track in Live for my NN 19 instrument and every thing works when I play it.
But, how does one record the Reason instrument then? I can only get the NN 19 to a) play if the pattern button (matrix) is on..and
b) loop over and over.
When I record it in Live's audio track I get the audio and its drawn as normal. But it wont play if the pattern button in Reason is not on, which makes it loop?? Question
It's possible that you cant record the rewired instruments, and you have to just run Reason simultaneously and loop the instruments? Or what's the deal with rewired instruments..this is my first attempt and I'm very close to done with the track.
Please help
Gracias
Mulu

i just got logic 8 and i'm considering doing all my production in that and only using live for performance. although i love the quickness of live i just don't quite feel like the production quality is there. there are many issues in making the comparison i suppose, such as how the sound engines/VSTs etc. of the two programs compare or how convenient live functions such as warping effect audio. i was quite amazed when i bounced my first ableton files into logic and they were all clipping away. things such as this make go hmmm...

I have recently been doing tag-team sets with a friend of mine who spins vinyl. When I've been beatmatching with him, I've discovered that Live doesn't have a "pause" button - the equivalent of just putting your hand on the record and stopping it. Am I right? Did they leave this off of Live, or am I just ignorant of the location of this rather important feature?

always tinkerin to try to squeeze better sound outta abletown. i heard a rumor that it's better keep your master and channel faders lower in live and turn up your soundcard and mixer levels. more headroom in live is better? my master in live stays in the red a lot of the time and i'm always wondering if i should back it off. I have peeked over some pretty hefty shoulders though and seen the master in the red. any other thoughts on gain structure would be much obliged.

hello everybody, this is a double post, not sure which tribe is more active.....
I just recently blessed my computer by loading up ableton 7 but still am having
trouble working it. The tutorilas on the actual programs helps a lot, but it seems like
I need to take even one sep back and begin from skratch.....

....so.....

without bringing up old questions, coz I'm sure this
one has been asked, but
?where can one find good intro tutorials for live?
I found some on youtube, but still too advanced for me at this moment
Tnaks in advance for any response!!

This may seem obvious, but can you use a usb hub with midi controllers? Are there any problems with doing so? I'm about to switch from a Firewire audio out to a usb one, and I'm also running two usb midi controllers, so I need to know if I'm asking for trouble since I only have two usb ports on my computer.

the main reason i dont like the trigger finger is that the knobs retain their location... meaning, when i use preset p1 and change values with the knobs, when i go to preset p2, the knobs still think they are where they were in preset one.
is there any way to change this?
what controller does NOT do this?
thanks for the info!

dropouts when triggering new track-macbook pro

I thought I had this problems fixed but I guess it isn't. I am having dropouts when triggering new tracks on my macbook pro. I have read this is an issue with the intel macbook pros and am wondering if anyone has any advice.
my settings are:
1024 buffer size
input latency 26.3
output latency 26.8
driver error compensation 0
overall latency 53.1

i have a laptop chill pad running so computer is not hot and my cpu never gets up over 20%
this is a new computer and i have no problems with it other than this- 2gb ram, all music files on my laptops hard drive...., 2.4ghz cpu

i am going to try troubleshooting some more but i have a big party coming up in a week so any help is much appreciated!

Remote SL 25 buttons 9 thru 16 in Automap

Buttons 9 through 16 (under the top row of knobs and above the bottom row of knobs on the left side) are supposed to be open for midi mapping in the Ableton Live Auto Template (40), but they are very quarky for me:

I've been trying to map them as EQ kills for L M and H on EQ3's in my audio tracks. But after I map it, here is what happens: I press the button once and it turns the EQ range OFF, but when I press the button again, the range doesn't turn back ON. If I fiddle with the #'s within the mapping setting (i.e. 0 /127, or 64/127 etc) I can get it to do the opposite - turn on but not off, or I can get it to kill as long as I hold down the button, but never just OFF then ON.

Oddly enough it works perfectly if I try mapping to a key on the keyboard. Press once to turn OFF, press again to turn back ON. But I really want to be able to use buttons 9 through 16, otherwise it's just a waste of space.

Anybody have any ideas?

cheers,

Hey everybody. I have Live 6 LE. My problem is I can't drag and drop itunes into Live session mode. In fact, I can't even access itunes from my browser. Is this a common problem and, if so, is there any way around it?

Thanks!

Share/Post Collected Ableton Sets Here (.als files with collected samples, zipped)

I've just learned the basics of Ableton7 and am now looking for tricks and refined techniques for remixing and programing tracks. I haven't noticed a thread like this, so if it exists, I apologize in advance!

If anyone wants to share their methods, show how they're working, we can post links for downloading our collected sets here. Not that I need to explain to anyone here, but collecting the set first will ensure there aren't any missing samples/loops, etc and that we'll be able to see the full set. Using sendspace.com or similar free file sharing sites, folks can offer up what they're doing with links for download.

Sound like a good idea?

I need help learning, so it sounds great to me!! I don't have many VST's yet, so that could be an issue, but I think it's worthwhile anyway... If you use a particular VST or plugin, please list it when you post your set. That'll help ensure we each have the tools to open the files, right?

If you have suggestions for how to make this work better, please be sure to post them. I'm a total novice!

Cheers,
Ian

Hardware for sale...Evolver, RC-50, and Timepiece AV

I need some cash to buy a new PC and replace my ailing Ultralite, so I'm getting ready to put some hardware up for sale on ebay in the next few days. Thought I'd give peeps here a crack at it before I do.

I'll be selling the following:

Dave Smith Evolver + original box + ac adapter
BOSS RC-50 Loop Station + all original accessories (manual, adapter, cd, etc...)
MOTU Timepiece AV

All are in excellent working condition. I may have the manuals for the Evolver and the Timepiece, but I haven't found them yet, so I don't want to promise them in the sale. I'll do another search for any loose odds and ends before I ship.

If anyone is interested, send me a private message for pics and prices...

thanks for the input!

NEWB: Matching Audio Clips and Warp Marked MP3's

Hey Folks,

I've had some issues which I'm guessing are common and most of you know the solution to. Before introducing MP3's to a set, I adjust the warp markers. I start 1.1 on the first downbeat after manually adjusting BPM. But when I introduce an audio clip sample or another warp marked Mp3 to the set, the downbeats often don't match up for the various songs. Is there a way to further automate this so that all the songs and clips beat match properly? Maybe I'm warp marking them incompletely? Or perhaps I should move the start points of most everything to the first downbeat so when the clips are fired they start at a similar beat?

The only other thing I can think of is having to cue everything..... But that seems like something Ableton does for us? Am I wrong?

Thanks!
Ian

How do I record midi sequences with Live 6??

So I've been playing around with my Xio synth and 2 programs--Massive and Tassman 4. The presets for these interfaces are amazing, but I cant record the midi sequences with Acid 6 or Live 6. I have a feeling Acid may be easier, so either technique will work for me if you know. All I want to do is record a sequence I play through Massive or Tassman, save it, and open it up in Sound Forge. The first time tried with Acid I was able to record the sequence, but when I played it back, the notes were basic notes from the Novation Xio. I have followed detailed instructions for Live6, but I am unable to record the sequences......really driving me nuts.... Can anyone throw up some useful links or step by step directions for either one of these, please????

Peace out.

Hey Folks,
Does anyone using a Trigger Finger know how I can make a pad trigger a sample or song and set the same pad to send start and stop info? If I hit the pad it just starts the song, but I'd also like that same pad to stop the song. I've been googling it trying to find a good answer for a bit to no avail! I've downloaded Enigma if that helps. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

MIDI Drum Pad Controller with Super Fast Reaction Time?

Here's my dilema. I want to record some very fast drum parts. (double bass metal drums) I've tried both Akai and Korg controllers. No good. They're just not fast enough to keep up with my fingers and they drop a ton of hits. Even though I haven't tried it, I'm guessing the Trigger Finger is going have the same problem (being the same price point and all). A keyboard just won't cut it for me as I can't stand the feel of the keys when "playing drums". My best solution to get that nice rolling triplet double bass has been to use three fingers on three different pads but it's kind hard to keep my rhythm solid due to the finger stretch involved in that method.

The only thing I've found that looks like it would do the trick is the Zen Drum, but I'm not in a position to dump $1000 on one of those. Has anyone seen another "drum controller" at a price point between the $200 MIDI pad controllers and the wallet emptying, Zen Drum?

New Apple Computers....suggestions.....

Hey Everyone,
I'm selling off my PC equipment and buying 2 new computers to switch over Mac. I'm new to Ableton and was wondering a couple of things as a newbie. Could I run into any problems using an iMac? I understand they aren't upgradeable (except the RAM). My concern is that I won't be able to upgrade the sound card, which it seems like most people here do. How will I output quality sound from the computer? Will I have to buy an external usb sound card? I also purchased a MacBook Pro laptop. Will the sound card be ok with that? I plan on buying a powered usb hub for all the various inputs.

Honestly, I don't really understand why I need a different sound card, if you don't mind, I'd love to hear any input about why I might upgrade.

And finally, can I buy a sound card that will allow me to input to my computers, and thus record into ableton, sound from external sources like guitars, etc.....

Set up will be:
2.6 GHZ MacBook Pro
2.8 GHZ iMac with 4 GB RAM

Thanks in advance for all the help!!

Four Band Frequency Divider Audio Rack (Preset Download)

This is a 100% transparent Four Band Frequency Divider Audio Rack for Live. Unlike the factory multiband live presets this keeps your audio integrity intact. This can be used for frequency dependent FX & mastering purposes. This uses subtractive phase techniques as opposed to minimal phase EQ. In other words the basic signal flow design framework wont change or color your audio. You can test this by double bussing & inverting the phase.

Something very different…The KARAS AMV by the Opposite of Faith featuring DJ Quest

What you are about to see is an evolution in film sound design far different from anything you‘ve heard before…

The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyist who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.

how did i get to be so lucky? newbie and proud!

Hi everyone,
I have a friend who always tells me i should dj and i say, yes of course, i know i should but i dont have the money for a new computer to do what i want to do... that always seems to be the problem, this lack of new computer. so when my friend told me about an event coming up that i attend and that she thought i should dj, i decided to figure out what kind of program i COULD run on my computer. I decided on ableton and was playing around with it and it was awesome! i showed my girlfriend some things and told her that i would have to wait until i got a new computer so i could fully explore the potential of the program because it could only handle about 2 things before it started skipping and stuttering.

SHE HANDED ME HER CREDIT CARD!

how lucky am i to have a girlfriend who believes in me and can see my passion so clearly as if it was her own?! believes in me so much that she is willing to put money down to support me! (she does pay off her credit card bills immediately)

so now i have a macbook pro on the way along with a novation nio 2/4 and a novation remote 25sl compact!!!!
I am waiting at the end of the driveway for the fedex man!

....so lucky i should go buy a lottery ticket....

okay, this is kindof hard to describe... but, I was inspired by a recent post about 'reverse reverb', which I've never tried...
I'm wondering if 'reverse reverb' is what I want to do...
sometimes, I hear samples coming into play in a way as if they're being sucked into the track... any ideas about what I'm talking about and how that's done?

hi,
i am doing one little party and am always told i should be a dj just for my musical taste and ability to pick songs... i dont want to be lame at this party so want to use ableton and my laptop. so i was reading the user manual and it says to cue, you need atleast 2 stereo outputs on an audio interface. i need to buy one but dont want to spend a bunch of money. can someone point me in the right direction? i have a powerbook g4 but i only have a 550mhz processor so that limits me because even the m-audio x-session requires a 667mhz processor.
do i really need two stereo outs or can i have one stereo for connecting to the sound system and one mono out for my headphones?

sigh... if only i could get my girlfriend to buy me a new macbook pro...
thanks for the help!

nuts abut warping

has anyone who tried using this software to mix songs live began going crazy because the warp markers are all wrong and the mixes turn out to be completely ugly? I began exploring this software a couple weeks ago and there are some tracks that are impossible to setup in Live to mix well. Doing the warp markers manually for complex songs will drive me crazy, and I have to use Live for a gig that is in less than a week. Does anyone have any methods/tricks to correctly set up the warp markers so the songs will mix smoothly?

Ok one more for you all. I inherited this great analog drum machine a few years ago. It's rhythm presets are some of the best retro drum sounds. For the best representation of this unit i have created REX loops. I have included all 18 rhythm presets plus "System running clock noise" sampled@32/48,000. The "System running clock noise" is the amplified output of the MRK-2 sitting at idle (no preset).
Enjoy.
(Live users don't forget to "Slice to New midi track". They are great to use with Drum Rack.)

This is the TR-505 DeComposer.
What you have are 29 24bit/44,100 Samples of this beast. Every pad has been captured with pristine TC-Electronic A/D converters. It's knobs&toggles have been tweaked to generate some of my favorite sounds. I have also included “Noize” samples of the amp output abuse mod. All samples are unaltered. This is the DeComposer as is. Enjoy this circuit bent disaster.

help with foot controller and Ableton Live

Hi there!
I would really appreciate if someone can give me a hand with this:
I'm a guitarrist trying to make use of Ableton Live by using a foot controller (Nobels MF-1)
I'm sending MIDI messages to Ableton through my MIDI interface (emagic MT4) and it looks that Ableton is receiving the MIDI as I see that little box flashing on the right hand side of the screen..
However, I can't map or change any parameter with the pedals...
I think that this foot controller sends program changes only... I
s that a problem?
I would like to trigger clips, scenes, looping, etc with the pedals....
Any help???

Cheers

I found a site that went over mixing in Ableton and dealing with automating faders. It suggested using the Utility plug in and automating that and then mixing with the faders so the automation is not on the fader itself-doing things this way has SAVED MY ASS on my current project!

Just thought I'd put that out there. I've read (don't remember if it was here) people complaining about mixing in Ableton-now its easy!

Hope this is useful to some...

Best way to manage my music library

So I'm running out of space on my Internal drive. (MacBook Pro). I have been using itunes as my library manager which seems to make it easy for ripping/importing etc. I usually drag audio files straight from itunes into Ableton, warp it, and then drag the saved/warped file from Ableton into a folder called Warped Tracks.

But I'm running out of space on the Internal. I have an external firewire and an external SATA drive. I'm thinking of moving my itunes library over to one of the external drives and pointing itunes to it. But all of the .asd files that Ableton creates when you warp a file are sitting in the itunes music folder too. If I move the itunes folder, will i loose all my links to my .asd files?

Is there a better way to manage thousands of audio files on a Mac other than itunes? Thanks for any advice!

cheers,
Sick of limitations?

At home I use Live for about 90% of my content. As amazingly powerful Live is it falls short in the mixing dept. So for the last few years i have been exporting individual tracks and mixing in Protools. I have been wanting to take advantage of the 32bit/88.2 or 96K capabilities of Live & my TC electronic interface. So this is where Protools LE fell short. No 32bit or 96k support with my current digi interface. I was also sick of having to mix with a different interface just for protools as well. But the audio editing features of Protools were worth the hassles. But now it can't handle my needs so it's time for protools to go bye bye.
This started my search for a new Mixing solution. I am also an familiar cubase/nuendo & samplitude user. But do to Live 7s new 64bit architecture i didn't want to deal with anything less. So this left Sonar & Reaper.
I was thinking i know Sonar is a mature app but i bet reapers going to suck.
I downloaded both demos and Sonar was nice. Way more bloated then i need. & i don't really care for the interface. I really only want a powerful, customizable mixing engine that supports my Remote Zero SL & Faderport.
So i figure what the hell i'll try Reaper.
WOW.
After i realized i don't have to use that horrid looking default theme. This is one of the most flexible Mixing engines i have ever used. Unlimited routing capabilities, Fully customizable interface, 64bit audio path, with real time bounce for my external dsp.
I can't tell how pleasantly surprised i am.
If you are in similar shoes i really recommend checking out Reaper.
This i a screen shot of my export from Live & Mix in reaper template.
http://www.rhythminmind.net/images/reaper%20screenshot.jpg

FYI- info about the benefits for 64bit mixing engines.

What's the deal w/ this? There was a deal, recently, where buyers of Live 6 could get a free upgrade to Live 7 Full. I can't find the info on this... anyone know?

Newb: Why Use Addtional Programs to Ableton?

Hey Everyone,

So here's my question: What do each of the various programs offer to supplement Ableton's inherent strengths? What will Reason, Cubase, etc. add to my music production either through Rewire or just using them stand alone? It seems like very few programmers use Ableton exclusively for programming their tracks, loops, beats, etc... I'm not looking for critisicsms of Ableton or any other program. I'm a total newb and I'd love an objective list of items I should look for in each program to supplement Ableton. I haven't purchased any other program yet, but I'd like to know what I might need. Or if all you use is Ableton for your music production and don't think any other program is necessary, I'd like to know that too!

I love Ableton and while this whole process of study is giving me daily headaches and I'm impatient, thanks to everyone who's been answering my millions of questions! I did a brief search of postings and didn't find any comrehensive answer to my question, so hopefully I'm not repeating anyone else's thread.

Cheers,
Ian

Using two midi controlers at once

Hi, I've got a Novation Remote 25SL that I use with Ableton, and now I just picked up a Trigger Finger. I want to be able to use both at the same time. Do I need to chain them - like run the TF through the Novation, or can they just work side by side.

When I just have my Novation hooked up, any virtual instrument or plug in / fx that I click on become automatically mapped to the Novation. What will hapen with mapping if I have both controlers hooked up at the same time?

cheers,

hey folks-

anyone have any suggestions for a good foot controller for live sets( so i can be away from the laptop some) as well as for home use?

im looking into the behringer fcb1010; but saw a few dodgy comments about it like the exp. pedal, as well as the digitech control x. anyone use one w/ live?

i will be mostly cueing clips and setting record times w/ it.
any info or experiences are very welcome.
thanks

live and misbehaving edirol ua-25??

hi!!!
i'm confused here....
3 questions which could be separated into different thread but.....ahhh well....
here's one package deal....

is it possible to dj with the soundcard roland's edirol ua-25. http://www.roland.com/products/en/UA-25/
i mean to output the sound and use my headphones for cueing.
there is 2 output on my soundcard. one L/R rca and one L/R 1/4".but i'm not sure if it is actually the same with 2 different type of adaptor.
plus the headphone plug.

i also get a 1 sec latency when i plug-in my guitar or my bass which i don;t get if i only play with my midi controller. i adjust the buffer and the sample rate is at 41100, but it does'nt seem to do anything!! any clue???

also...live does'nt seem to recognize the driver type as an ASIO and i still have
to use the mme/directx which i think does'nt give as much sound quality....

help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my new little studio, some questions from a humble student.

So I want to make music, I have the cabin in the woods, the macbook, ozone midi controler, live light, garageband, an imic usb thing, a minidisk recorder with optical out, and a condenser mic - and of course insturments.

My biggest question is recording vocals, would it be better to use a md recorder to capture the recording vocals, than analog it out to the macs sound input, or better yet to send it out threw the imic ? Or would it be better to just plug the imic in and plug the condensor mic right to that ? or even straight mic into the audio in on the mac book.

it seems every way is flawed and \i have no more cash. the mini disk picks up the mechanical noise, and looses quality when putting to the computer.

The imic picks up the electrical noise of the computer and not sure its a good quality device anyways

what would be the best solution here, i tested them all and I guess i can hardly tell the difference, lots of hiss and stuff everywhere.

syncing two laptops via midi??

hey, i was wondering if anyone could give me some steps on how to sync two laptops together? I know that it's possibly and fairly easy to do but we have been having some troubles, I think there is something we are not getting.

our setup is:
2 macbook pro laptops (one running live 6 one running live 5)
Version 5 laptop has an m-audio firewire410 , the version 6 laptop has an m-audio midisport2X2.

I know that we have to set one laptop as the master and one as the slave, but we're not sure exactly who should be running the midi out or in? we're also not sure which things to select in abletons preferences (i believe there is remote, track, sync)?

anyone help would be MUCH appreciated!

thanks

best midi controller for DJing with Ableton Live

Who has an opinion on the best midi controller from the DJ point of view.

A controller with a good crossfader seems logical, but that really narrows the range. Is the X-session Pro going to fall apart in a month? Is anybody using more than one controller at once, in order to get more functionality, i.e. crossfader on one controller, joystick, keys, or good pads, on another? Anybody using the Faderfox and loving it?

Is there one controller out there that's great for DJing and music creation?

Thanks for any advice

I'm totally new to this stuff. So new that I'm not even sure why I want to learn AL, but I think it's an important new tool in my work.

So, question is, I need a new computer. I know the basic pros and cons of Mac's vs. PC's so I don't need to hear that again, but I need to know if there is any real reason for getting a Mac since AL has a PC version as well. I want to use some basic midi triggers, do loops, etc. while performing using acoustic, but effected, instruments.

Anyone here use a PC for AL?

Thanks.

odd meter loop/clip problems

I'm having problems doing clips in odd meters like 7, 11, 15 etc...

I'm using Live 6.0.10 on an Apple Powerbook 1.5 GHz Power PC G4 2GB DDR SRAM using OSX 10.4.11. The audio interface is a MOTU 828.

In Session view, I'll set the signature denominator to 7/8 (or 7/4 sometimes). Then I'll pick a drum instrument in Impulse to use for creating drum clips. I start to record a clip with the metronome on ( I use an Akai percussion pad controller). At first, it sounds correct with the downbeat metronome click in the right place (on "1"). But as I record or play back the clip, the metronome downbeat click sound moves to another beat. It stays at the same tempo but the downbeat changes as if it doesn't want to stay in 7/8 or 7/4. Can you figure out why it's doing this? A lot of what I'm working on is in odd meters.

Thanks!

Live 7 Instrument Rack w/ Massive

What a great solution. The Instrument and Drum Racks added to Live 7 are totally worth using, but I have a great setup for Massive using the Instrument Rack (IR). 8 Macro knobs in Massive and 8 Macro knobs in the Instrument Rack...Mmmmm. So, now I have an IR preset for dropping in Massive with the mapping already done and I'm good to start playing. No further setup is needed. Thank you, Ableton for keeping me happy. Being able to route and reroute Audio effects in that same MIDI channel is a great thing as well.

Next, I'm going to play around with Battery and Drum Rack and see how well they integrate for easy startup. Good times. Hope you all are having this much fun with the much improved plug in integration too.

Are the new Macbooks good enough to run 7? Does the Macbook Pro offer that much more for music editing? It seems like the new line of Macbooks are more powerful than the one or two year old Macbook Pros and Powerbooks I see being used out there to run Ableton.

"Wow" Is all I have to say but being that this is a new topic I guess I need to say something more. So I personally use M-audio's trigger finger along with the novation X-station 25. I like the trigger finger because of what I do and how I use Ableton, the novation well I try not to ever leave home without it. When playing out given the environment and time slot played I like to have the option to add in lots of spontaneous synth sound's along with giving some of the more minimal music "when appropriate" a big crunchy bass line. Anyway thats all fine but then I come across this!!!
What does everyone think? Of course I won't be getting it to replace my X-station but I think this could be a great addition to my D.j/studio setup. The price tag is a bit overwhelming and I believe the faders aren't motorized which for this $$$$$ I think that kicks rocks. Here are some links to definitely check out. Love to all..

Novation Remote 25SL keyboard with Live

Well I finaly decided to go with the Novation Remote 25SL as my midi controller for Live. I chose it because it seemed functional for both creating new music and DJ applications. I got the latest Auto Map files from the Novation site and it is working very well so far. I had to re-map the deault midi notes for the drum pads on the SL so that they would trigger the Impulse pads, and now those are working great, but...

I can't figure out how to use the actual keys of the SL's keyboard to play Lives virtual instruments. So far I can can use Impulse and they 8 associated pads, but I want to play the actual keyboard like a synthesizer. What am I missing?

cheers,

For some reason Ableton won't save my automation for supa trigga when I save my song file. Anybody else notice this, or is it just me? I use a G4 Powerbook and am on OSX 10.3.9. I know that 10.4 is recommended but, that is the only glitch that I've experienced since upgrading to Live 6. While I am thinking about it, does anybody use Live 6 and 10.5 yet?

All beats are performed live with electronic drums and samples, other sounds are designed and generated directly from computer, accessed via theremin and looped on the spot. "Irwin is considered by many the most innovative and talented live electronic act in the world." -KPBS
Jim Cowgill has been active in electronic music since 1982. From early work with synth- pop bands like Glad Corp, he eventually became a solo performer occasionally collaborating with other musicians. He has composed music for corporate videos, and theatrical sound design. His current music project is Sequenox; a journey into cinematic ambient and synthesized rhythms. Jim has used Ableton Live since version 4; and relies on it as a creative tool, both in performance and in the studio.
Since hearing Led Zeppelin played back on an Apple IIe computer in 1985, Drew Anderson has been hooked on sound and computers. Professionally, he has worn many hats including writer for Computer Music and mastering engineer for Masterdisk in NYC. Musically, he has collaborated with musicians and artists from around the world for a number of multimedia and musical projects. Currently he is composing for the installation "The God Project" with artist Keri Bruno and writing for his project "lake of sleep'. Drew has been an active Abelton user (and obsessive) since the demo of Live 1.0.

Playing live set from Live tracks on laptop - a solution

Hi all,

New to the group. I produce my own tracks using Live and a ton of filters and plugins (NI mostly). I release the tracks as well as play them live blended as a set. I first tried playing all the als tracks in one session but on most laptops, even my Duo Core 2 Ghz with 1.5 GB RAM etc, the CPU and disk fail after 2-3 minutes. I then tried freezing tracks, but this also created small glitches when the disk or CPU maxed, so I settled with Rendering the tracks as 24 bit 48000 sample wavs, and creating an arrangement with the wavs, blended with all the DJ moves (equilization, volume, filters, all automated), the set is an hour long and so far it has stood true on this laptop through several live gigs without a glitch.

Yes - I miss having all my clips to manipulate, but at the end of the day, performing live you CANNOT have issues, so this seems the safest way.

Any comments?

I tried rendering as 24 bit 196000 sample, but cant tell the difference.
Mastering Rendering

I've begun 'rendering' my songs to 16bit 44.1Khz audio... but, the overall volume seems really low in comparison to other songs in my collection (other people's). This is when my master volume is at 0dB and I normalize the rendering. I've boosted the master volume to 6dB, rendered and then re-rendered the track with an additional 6dB, without normalizing the rendering (the only way to boost the volume in rendering?)... I've had to do this three times, adding 18dB to my track, in order for it to be of comparable volume to the other tracks in my collection!
Any thoughts, comments?

latency survay (if you have the time to geek out pease take)

I'm just curious what the average latency most people are working at. I want real world numbers not product hype.
If you could go to your audio preferences & post what your Buffer Size, input latency, output latency & overall latency you can get GLITCH free with the test tone at 80% cpu running at 44100 that would be cool. OS, Ram & cpu would be nice as well..

The lowest i can run glitch free is

Buffer Size = 128
Input latency = 4.81 ms
Output latency = 4.54
Overall latency = 9.34
OS= Vista
Ram=2gig
CPU= dual core2 2.2

http://www.rhythminmind.net/temp/Random%20Pics/latency.jpg
------------------------------------------

I usually run
Buffer Size = 128
Input latency = 4.81 ms
Output latency = 4.54
Overall latency = 9.34
This works fine for me up to 60% cpu
